Conserving Earth's Biodiversity with E. O. Wilson with Book by Edward Osborne Wilson, The Conserving Earth's Biodiversity CD-ROM is an entirely new way to study and teach conservation biology and environmental science. Created from the ground up to make the most of today's multimedia technology, it provides a rich learning experience and a wealth of valuable information and materials - including interactive models that allow learners to study dynamic systems, detailed maps, and links to resources on the World Wide Web - that build upon and enhance traditional approaches to the subject. Conserving Earth's Biodiversity is a pioneering educational tool based on the teachings and writings of renowned biologist Edward O. Wilson, and created and developed by science educator Dan Perlman. The program's insightful pedagogy combined with a unique use of multimedia makes it an ideal complement to any standard textbook. Edward O. Wilson is University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. Arguably the most important evolutionary biologist of his time, he has made seminal contributions to the study of evolution and ecology, created the field of sociobiology, and was one of the earliest voices to speak out about biodiversity loss. Among his books are Sociobiology (Harvard, 1975), The Diversity of Life (Harvard, 1992), and Consilience (Knopf, 1998). Books published by Island Press are Naturalist (1994) and In Search of Nature (1996). Dan L. Perlman has taught conservation biology at Harvard University for nine years, in addition to teaching all ages from pre-school to post-graduate education for college professors and professionals. He has designed curricula, co-authored with Glenn Adelson the textbook Biodiversity: Exploring Values and Priorities in Conservation(Blackwell, 1997), and is a nature photographer and former systems analyst.
Hartmann and Kester's Plant Propagation: Principles and Practices by Hudson T. Hartmann, Hallmarked as the most successful text of its kind, this remarkably thorough book covers all aspects or the propagation of plants--both sexual and asexual--with considerable attention given to human (vs. natural) efforts to increase plant numbers. The text presents both the art and science of propagation, and conveys knowledge of specific kinds of plants and the particular methods by which those plants must be propagated. New features of the seventh edition include: In-depth text boxes separate more advanced topics or highlight specific key terminology. User-friendly elements, such as chapter-opening objectives and a marginal glossary have been added to assist users in managing and digesting the vast amount of technical information presented in this course. FREE glossary CD-ROM packaged with the text provides a valuable resource for learning the extensive new vocabulary of this course. Full-color photos and video clips help bring many of the terms to life. Chapter 2 has been extensively revised to synthesize the revolutionary impact of biotechnology. The new chapter alerts readers to recent biotechnology advances, their impact on biological concepts and their impact on the practice of plant propagation and makes readers aware of the increasing promise and controversy this technology brings with it.
Extrasolar biology - Extrasolar biology is the study of the life science of a planet which orbits a star other than the Sun, and therefore is related to the study of extraterrestrial life-forms inhabiting a planetary system other than our solar system. National Association of Biology Teachers - The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) is an American-based scholarly society which states it "empowers educators to provide the best possible biology and life science education for all students." Biology - Biology is the branch of science dealing with the study of life. It is concerned with the characteristics, classification, and behaviors of organisms, how species come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with the environment. CD-ROM - The CD-ROM (an abbreviation for "Compact Disc Read-Only Memory") is a non-volatile optical data storage medium using the same physical format as audio CDs, readable by a computer with a CD-ROM drive. A CD-ROM is a flat, metallized plastic disc with digital information encoded on it in a spiral from the center to the outside edge.
